Battery Blackout Lamp

Here is the original article straight from
Book No. 4510, PRACTICAL DELTA PROJECTS
NEW & NOVEL THINGS TO MAKE, BOOK 10
DELTA MFG. DIVISION

A VERY useful as well as attractive project for the craftsman. With the present black-outs going on all over the country, this lamp when placel on the floor will prevent one from stumbling over furniture during a blackout, or by turning the unit up side down, you have a lamp to light up the room when the electric current is shut off.
The upper section is turned from glued stock as shown below. As shown in the sketch, the inside is gauged out to take an ordinary drinking glass for fresh flowers. An additional 7/8 inch can be drilled for a candle as shown in the photo.
The base is made from 1/2 inch stock. All corners are cut at 45o and glued together. The mouldings are made with cutters indicated below. A standard Christmas tree light socket is used with a flashlight bulb. The 6 volt battery is the square type which is held in the base by a cover fastened with two number 7-2 inch round head wood screws. Mount a small toggle switch in the side as shown. Make certain to mortise the hole for the switch in the side piece before assembling the base. Use the side which does not have the screws for holding the battery cover. For the finish, use either paint or enamel. Egg shell color would be the most suitable.

Photo shows how light reflects on the floor only during a blackout.
